We are very excited to be participating in the upcoming "Your Ultimate Wedding" this January! In the meantime, Von Wedding Films captured the proposal that our prospective groom, Michael Gulikers, made to his future bride, Malorie Christian, last Friday night! Balliet's provided Malorie's stunning gown and Moliere Bridal will provide Malorie's wedding gown for the January 13th nuptials.

We were thrilled to provide the stunning engagement ring; a beautiful cushion cut diamond set in 18kt white gold and surrounded by a halo of tiny diamonds! Malorie also wore beautiful diamond and white gold earrings and a bracelet by Memoire!

Cheryl Brown’s fabulous home in Heritage Hills provided the perfect backdrop for the proposal. Marianne's Rentals provided staging and will provide the spectacular table settings for next month's ceremony which will take place at the Oklahoma City Golf & Country Club.

Temple St. Clair Honored at the 2011 ACE Awards

Our Temple St. Clair Trunk Show is tomorrow, and we want to congratulate Temple on being honored at the 2011 ACE Awards! She received the Hall of Fame Award in celebration of the 25th anniversary of her company. Cynthia Nixon, of Sex and the City fame, presented the award while wearing Temple St. Clair's 18kt Flower Cluster necklace. Temple was wearing one of our favorite pieces at the event: the 18kt Large Tolomeo Pendant with MixedSapphires and Diamonds.

She was in great company as fellow honorees included: Rebecca Minkoff and Phillip Treacy.

The Truth About SI3

If you've been shopping for a diamond lately, then you know how easy it is to be frustrated by the process depending on where you're shopping. To make matters even more confusing, not every laboratory issuing diamond certificates uses the same grading standards. Some laboratories even make up their own grades!

A case in point is the SI3 clarity grade. Several years ago the Los Angeles location of the European Gem Lab (EGL) introduced the SI3 grade, a move undoubtedly aimed at garnering more business from wholesale and retail clients who couldn't sell a diamond without a certificate. And who wants a cert that says a diamond they are buying is I1 (Included/Imperfect)? Not many, hence the need to create a grade that would straddle the fence of SI2 and I1, all in the name of marketing.

The Accredited Gemologists Association defines a diamond graded as SI3 as "those which would normally have been graded as a very low SI2, almost I1." The article went on to say that typical SI3 diamonds are those which contain approximately three or more inclusions which, if taken individually, might have warranted an SI2 grade but, taken collectively, would be graded SI3.

The bottom line is this: The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) created the current grading scale that is utilized by all Graduate Gemologists and Certified Gemologists today. The GIA and the American Gem Society (AGS) are the only governing bodies in our industry that certify gemologists and issue diplomas accordingly, and neither organization recognizes the SI3 grade.

When you buy a diamond, buy it for its beauty. There are many beautiful I1 diamonds. If you can barely see the inclusion without using a loupe, perhaps it can be hidden underneath a prong. Buy your diamond from a reputable dealer who is a member of the American Gem Society or, at the very least, who carries certified and non-certified diamonds, can explain the differences between each, and will offer a minimum of 10 days to return the diamond, no questions asked, if you are not completely satisfied with your purchase. This return period gives you the opportunity to have the grade verified by an independent, graduate gemologist and to make sure that the certificate, if one is issued, is valid.

And if your salesperson tells you that the diamond they are showing you is SI3...well, then, just know that not only will it NOT have a GIA or AGS certificate, but it's an I1.

My store has always been known for carrying designer and "one-off pieces" of jewelry that aren't easily sourced elsewhere in Oklahoma and, sometimes, in most of the U.S. During the past year, it became apparant that in addition to carrying some of the most spectacular engagement rings and wedding bands in the area, we needed to answer the needs of a growing group of people who want something truly unique and different.

I've been watching the work of Boulder, Colorado jewelry designer, Todd Reed, for the past four years. Todd has been making jewelry for 20 years and is entirely self-taught. It wasn't until he saw a pile of rough diamonds about 10 years ago, though, that his inspiration really took off. Todd is fascinated with the myriad of colors and shapes you find in rough diamonds. He takes diamond material that used to be ground down and applied to drill bits and industrial saws and, with painterly precision, makes some of the most cool diamond jewelry available today.

Todd doesn't just make engagement rings and wedding bands. In fact, his fine fashion jewelry that is crafted from oxidized sterling silver and 18kt yellow gold and, sometimes, palladium, outsells the wedding ring merchanidise. And whose to say you can't stack two of those crazy-gorgeous engagement center stone rings together for a "stacking" right hand ring? Well, of course you can!

It's not just women who want something unique these days: never a week goes by that the guys aren't asking for something almost bespoke. I'm crazy for the way Todd channel sets rough, square diamonds in his men's bands. Sometimes they're set on the edge of a band a la Brad Pitt for Damiani a few years ago, though Todd's take on it is, in my opinion, more interesting. Sometimes they are set in a subtle curve around the diameter of a band, the diamonds varying in color just enough to make you look a second time.

Todd employs eight jewelers in his Boulder workshop, and they hand fabricate 98% of everything they make. What does that mean? It means that every piece is, in effect, one of a kind as no pre-cast molds are used to duplicate styles. Does it take extra time to make jewelry that way? Yes, it does. But in a world where everybody is trying to do things faster and cheaper, I applaud the person who understands that the method of making a piece is critical to achieving the desired, artistic outcome.

Moonstones, sometimes likened to a raindrop or tear, have long reminded people in Asia that the moon cannot be seen during the rain, just as it is difficult to see through our tears. By bringing love and abundance into our lives today and helping us to see the future, moonstones allow us to bring the hope of all good things into our lives.

What's New in My Collection!

I've been out of pocket for a while...traveling to Italy with my family and, prior to that, to Las Vegas for the largest jewelry market of the year. This summer is going to be a busy one! I have trunk shows in Sun Valley, Idaho and Jackson Hole, Wyoming, plus I am debuting a new line of vermeil jewelry on ShopNBC at the end of July (more on that later!).

In the meantime, my fabulously talented jewelers have been working away to execute some of my newest designs as well as your custom projects.

Check out these two pair of cufflinks that I just put out! The pair on the left features faceted cabachons of natural Afghanistan lapis as well as Australian opals. The bold sterling silver and 22kt yellow gold granulation gives these such a masculine appeal! I love the archeaological history behind these fossilized Nautilus shells. Setting them in cufflinks makes a bold statement for the man who likes french cuffs during the week and runs ultramarathons on the weekends.

These colorful 22kt yellow gold and sterling and gold stack rings have colored gemstones from my vault that are more colorful than candy! Each is hand-made and one of a kind. at the First Annual Torch Awards.

Jenn's beautiful earrings won 2nd place in this national competition! The earrings were crafted from 18kt white gold, diamonds, pink sapphires and Tahitian pearls.

The Torch Awards competition competition invited all state jewelers associations to submit winners of their own individual 2010 design contests to compete nationally during the March show where attending buyers voted on the winning designs.

We had to keep it a BIG SECRET! But now the cat is out of the bag: just moments ago, over 40 million people saw Blake Overstreet of Oklahoma City propose to his girlfriend, "Sammi," on the Oprah Winfrey Show, shot in December in Australia.

I am thrilled to tell you that the fabulous ring Blake carried in his pocket all the way "down under" came from our store!

When I asked Blake's mother, Rose Charan, why she told Blake to come to our store to purchase his wedding ring she said, "You have things that are unusual and different, and your reputation for quality and service stands out."

Congratulations to Jennifer Duell, winner of the Oklahoma Jeweler's Association 2010 Design Contest! Jennifer has worked for me for 4 1/2 years, and I'm thrilled that her entry was chosen at this year's conference as "Best of Show!" As the statewide winner, her earrings are now eligible for entry into the 2011 Jeweler's of America National Competition and will be exhibited at the JA Show in New York City in January! If she wins there, she will receive national recognition in several trade publications and more!

For the competition, Jennifer designed a pair of Tahitian Pearl earrings in 18kt white gold, featuring diamonds, and pink sapphires which are bead set in the front and on the profile.

I'm proud to have Jennifer designing and working with me here at the store. For those of you who have worked with her, you know how good she is! Be sure to congratulate her the next time you see her!

Marcia Cross, of Desperate Housewives fame, stars with Milla Jovovich and Bill Pullman. Marcia liked some of the pieces she saw on set so much that she made the trip to my store and purchased items for crew members as well as herself. Marcia purchased several bands from Sylva et Cie, pictured here as well as Emily Armenta.

Executive producer, Renee Knox, purchased Emily Armenta for Milla Jovovich, who employed Renee's daughter during the shoot this summer. Other favorites that went out the door with Marcia and her best friend were diamond studs and a one of a kind carved quartz pendant & necklace in 22kt yellow gold designed by me.

Having a bit of Hollywood here in OKC was fun for many of my friends this summer, including David and Maryann Johndrow, who also served as executive producers for the film. David and Maryann hosted Milla Jovovich and others at the kickoff party on Lake Hefner which featured wines from Johndrow Vineyards.

Karen has been "beading" for a number of years, but several years ago the two partnered and took their ideas to the next level, creating an affordable, gorgeous collection of Moghul-inspired jewelry.

Each of our 2010 Perfect Proposal Winners picked up their prize packages last Friday, and it was great to have both couples in my store! Myrla and Gary Pierson will be headed to The Boulevard restaurant sometime in the near future with transportation courtesy of King's Limo Service. Hallie Moore and Chase Vincent, our engaged couple, will dine at Mahogany Prime Steakhouse with limo service as well, and their wedding will receive a complimentary page in The Bride's of Oklahoma Magazine (the exact wedding date hasn't been determined, so don't look for it in the next issue, but perhaps in 2011!).

The two couples were surprised and tickled to win: Myrla is now sporting an 18kt white gold and diamond necklace by Charriol and Hallie is wearing an infinity symbol pendant with two, round diamonds totaling 1.00cts. Happy New Year! I've been away for awhile, mostly playing Santa Claus (or is that Missus Claus?!). I do appreciate everyone who allowed me and my staff to assist with their gift giving this holiday season. I especially want to thank all of you who found us online. One of our new clients is from the Los Angeles area; he found a picture his wife had printed off my website of some earrings I designed and had me make a pair for her. Very cool. Thank you!

Now it's time for our 4th annual Perfect Proposal Contest! I hope that all of you who are legal residents of Oklahoma will consider entering. It doesn't matter if you're married or engaged, we have a prize package for both! Every year we receive many inventive, heart warming, tear jerking, and good ole' fashioned engagement stories, making it very difficult to narrow the field to just 5 finalists in each catagory. In the coming weeks, I may just share some of my past favorites. This may give some of you men some ideas about how to propose! Lord knows my husband, Brad, wasn't that creative! Monica Rich Kosann's byline is "Family is Always in Fashion." It not only applies to the exquisite black and white portraits featured in her latest book, The Fine Art of Family, but to the expertly crafted lockets and charms she fashions to hold memories of those who are dear to us.

Monica was recently featured in Town and Country Magazine and has her own boutique inside Manhattan's own Bergdorf Goodman. Like many of us in the jewelry business, crafting objects in precious metal was not her life- long dream. As a professional photographer, Monica was frustrated with the lack of quality frames and cases available to her clientele for housing the heirloom photos of their children and family members that she so lovingly captured. And so a new business was born!

Initially she manufactured handsome frames and keepsakes. But several years ago a client suggested they would like to wear their photos, but their were no lockets available of any quality or style. Bingo! A new collection of jewelry was born.

My favorite part of the collection is the Gate Series, which features a gate-like design in front of the first photo. These lockets can house 2 or up to 3 photos; perfect for mothers with more than one child or special pet. Until now, the only locket collection I have seen that could earn the title "heirloom," is a German line by Victor Mayer, famous for their license to make Faberge Egg replicas plus enamel lockets. Still, the Victor Mayer lockets are only made in 18kt yellow and white gold, and start around $1,400.00 for something very simple.
This is simply out of many people's price range for a quality locket.

Monica's lockets are available in sterling silver or 18kt yellow gold, so the price range is great, with single image silver lockets on a chain starting at under $210! The lockets come in a variety of finishes, including hand engraving, and they are solid and sturdy. Really built to last. The chains are of excellent quality as well, and I was pleasantly surprised how chunky the pieces are! No small, wimpy lockets or chains here. You're proud of your family and you're not going to hide them! (For those of you who don't like anything too oversized, there are plenty of diminutive pieces as well.)

Here Come Market Days!

You won't want to miss one of the most exciting in-store events we've ever had, next Wednesday and Thursday, October 21st and 22nd! I have two, new artists coming to the store and neither have ever been to Oklahoma: Sylva Yepremian of Sylva et Cie and Suzie Landa. I met both women at the Las Vegas Jewelry Market this June and knew we had to have their jewelry in our store.

Sylva was born in Lebanon and raised in Paris. Her father, a reknown jeweler for Cartier, decided to move the family to L.A. when Sylva was college age. She avoided the jewelry business early in her career, but her talent couldn't be denied and she was soon working with her father, designing state of the art, cutting edge pieces for his California clientelle. She recently started her own company, and her love of natural forms and vintage inspired jewelry is evident in her work.

Suzie Landa was born in L.A. and now lives in New York City. She began making jewelry for friends and family at the age of 5 out of pipe cleaners and telephone wire. Her passion for all things bright and shiny never diminished, but a detour to the film industry kept her from her true passion until she was laid off during a down turn. What an unfortunte blessing for her and the rest of us! Suzie rekindled her passion for metalsmithing and candy colored gemstones, creating unique, modern pieces that appeal to the self assured woman who isn't afraid of a little self indulgence!

In addition to these two trunk shows, I am emptying my vault of a dazzling array of loose gemstones, beads, bronze artifacts, and carvings and creating my own, mini Jewelry Market! Everything will be 40-50% Off, and you can hang onto any Treasures you find, or we'll make them up into something amazing for the holidays!

New Mizuki has Arrived!

It's been awhile since we've had Mizuki in our store, and both the gold and sterling silver collections are like a breath of fresh air!

Mizuki Nagasawa was born in Japan and raised in New York City. She studied sculpture at SVA and moved to Soho after graduating. Her fine arts background and cool Soho style, combined with her Japanese heritage, are apparant in the sleek movement and visual power of her deceptively simple shapes.

Think "Naked Adornment," and you have Mizuki. Priced from $85.00 in silver and $495.00 in 14kt yellow gold, there is something in everyone's price range. My personal favorite is the white coral necklace and earring, pictured here, with the black diamond accents. Hope you like it too!

Shopping for an engagement ring or wedding band? You`re not finished if you haven`t stopped by my store! We have fabulous, new styles by Martin Flyer, Memoire, Christopher Designs, and others. What? You didn`t know I carried a wide selection of bridal merchandise? I`m not surprised. When I opened Naifeh Fine Jewelry eleven years ago it was as a lease department inside a women`s boutique, and there was no room for bridal merchandise. My focus was solely on fine fashion jewelry for women and custom design.

Now in our 7th year in our "new" location in Casady Square, we have an entire "bridal boutique" featuring a large selection of styles in white gold and platinum. Yellow gold "is back" in fine fashion jewelry, but it hasn`t made the swing to engagement rings yet. Perhaps everyone just decided that most diamonds look better in white metal! If you do prefer yellow gold, though, we have some fabulous, new bands currently in stock in 18kt yellow gold with diamond pave and any ring you see in white metal can be special ordered in yellow gold.

If you`re shopping on the internet, I still want you to come by and visit with one of my sales staff, or me if I`m available. Not only is our pricing competative, we can show you a larger selection, explain why certain diamonds are more expensive than others and take the mystery out of reading a GIA, EGL and AGS certificate.
